Trimming is an absolute essential for men who wear beards and wish to present a neat, well groomed appearance. However, care should be exercised when trimming to avoid removing too much hair and being forced to shave the beard off. Here, we will discuss how to trim a beard properly.

There are a couple of different methods of trimming. One is to use a pair of scissors and a comb. The other is to use an electric or battery powered beard trimmer with or without the comb. For beginners, it is recommended to use the trimmer because it has multiple settings and is more forgiving than the scissors in many ways.

The first step is to ensure that the beard is completely clean and dry. Use of a good quality beard shampoo is recommended because beard hair is different from that on the scalp. One must never attempt to trim a wet beard because the hair will look longer when wet and will not dry in the same position.

Once the beard has been prepared, one should take a comb and run it through the beard to get all the hair pointing in a uniform direction. After determining how long one wants to keep the beard, he should run the comb through a section of beard until it has the correct length beneath it. Next cut the hair on the outside of the comb with a sharp pair of scissors. Repeat this procedure over the entire beard.

For most, it is recommended that they start at one ear and trim down to the point of the chin, then repeat this process on the other side. Trim beneath the chin after the sides are done. Next, using a razor or trimmer, cut the hair on the neck so that the beard stands out and looks neat.

Trimmers come in different sizes and styles. Most have guards that can be attached that will act as a comb and control the length of the hair as it is cut. One can also use a trimmer with a regular comb as mentioned above, trimming on the outside of the comb after it has been pulled to the correct length.

For those who do not want a full beard or a clean shave, one can set the depth on most trimmers to leave a controlled length of stubble. The trimmer can also be used to shave the neck and shape the beard or stubble.
